About North Atherton Farmers Market:

We are currently seeking a dedicated individual to join our team as a SEASONAL Market Manager.  This exciting opportunity offers a competitive salary and flexible hours, making it the perfect fit for those seeking part time seasonal work.

The NAFM is a seasonal, producers-only market located in State College, PA.  This year the market will be celebrating 14 years in operation.  In addition to the many small farmers that grow and raise products at the market, the NAFM is also proud to feature local bakeries, specialty food vendors, and producers of farm-based products.  NAFM is a vibrant community hub dedicated to supporting local agriculture, providing high quality food to the community and being a place to connect with neighbors and friends. We believe in promoting sustainable agriculture and fostering a strong community spirit.

This year NAFM will take place every Saturday from 10am-2pm in the parking lot of Home Depot located in State College, PA.  The market runs from May 18th, 2024 through November 9th, 2024.

Job Overview:

The Farmers Market Manager will play a crucial role in the seasonal operations and success of the North Atherton Farmers Market. The Market Manager, under the direction of the NAFM Board of Directors, will be the primary person responsible for the Farmers Market’s social media platforms/content,  weekly market newsletter, market website maintenance, hands-on management on market Saturdays, vendor relations, customer service, and new vendor onboarding.  This position requires a highly organized, energetic, and community-oriented individual who is passionate about local food, sustainable agriculture, and community.

This position is a seasonal, part-time, competitive salary position from April 2024 through November 2024, with some additional off-season paperwork and social media work which receives hourly compensation. The time commitment during market season is 10-20 per week, including Saturday market.

Responsibilities:

  • Produce and digitally distribute weekly newsletter.

  • Coordinate market logistics including vendor/guest vendor placement, safety plan and more.

  • On-site management each week; includes, but is not limited to:

    • Event set-up and breakdown

    • Volunteer management

    • Vendor management  

    • Customer service/assistance

  • Act as the primary point of contact for vendors, required paperwork that is kept on file and communication.

  • Staff the information booth during Saturday  market

    • Provide equipment and supplies to the necessary parties

    • Greet and welcome customers, answer questions

  • Maintain NAFM’s weekly social media presence across multiple platforms in accordance with the values and mission of NAFM: Facebook, Instagram

    • Visual and written content creation

    • Plan and execute special campaigns (National Farmers Market Week etc)

    • Planning and maintenance of a social media calendar

  • Organize and coordinate special events and activities at the market to enhance the community experience.

  • Ensure compliance with health regulations and safety standards.

  • Engage with the community to gather feedback and suggestions for market improvement.

  • ​​Other duties as assigned by the Board to support NAFM.

  • Participate in Board meetings as requested by the Board.

Qualifications:

  • Essential: Knowledge of Gmail, social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Nextdoor), Microsoft Office, Google Drive office suite, WordPress, Mailchimp, and Canva.

  • Experience in event planning, community engagement, or related fields.

  • Passionate about local food systems, sustainable agriculture, and community building.

  • Experience in social media strategy and content creation across multiple platforms.

  • Strong oral, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.

  • Experience in customer service

  • Ability to spend a significant amount of time being active in all weather– set-up and break-down of NAFM equipment, including tents, tables, and a variety of supplies.

  • Comfortable and confident in resolving conflict while maintaining an open and level demeanor.

  • Ability to think quickly and pivot as needed to address an issue.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Availability on Saturdays and additional hours as needed for special events.

  • Ability to transport up to 50 pounds.
